One of the most stress-causing decisions many seniors have to decide is what to wear. Our answer is always to tap into your personal style. You need to feel comfortable in your clothing. That said, don't be afraid to get a little playful and try something new. Make sure to check with your senior portrait photographer to make sure you understand what your session includes. Some photographers create experiences based on the amount of time you shoot with them, others base their experience on number of outfits, others based on other metrics. Just make sure you understand, from a style perspective, what your session includes.

For My Story Minnesota Seniors, you have unlimited wardrobe changes. Our typical senior will change their wardrobe 2-3 times throughout the shoot. Our photographer, Matt, recommends that seniors start with classic looks to get those timeless portraits for mom, and then move into more trendy and current looks that might not withstand the test of time. Want a fun experiment to illustrate this? Ask your mom about what was in style when she was in high school, you might be surprised.

Everyone’s outfit is going to be different, and that’s exactly the point. Still, if you’re looking for a bit more guidance, here are some ideas that may help.

Pair Solids with Prints

We often recommend wearing solid blocks of color since they photograph really well, but you can also incorporate some fun prints, as well. The key is to keep the prints as an accent versus the feature, and to stick with one type of print versus multiple.

Play Up Your Accessories

Now’s your chance really have some fun with your style and play up your outfit with fun accessories. Think hats, belts, jewelry, and layers. That necklace or hat or jacket can dramatically change the look and this is awesome. It allows you to change your look without changing your whole wardrobe (which can take a lot of time). Accessories are the BEST and at My Story Minnesota we always recommend you bring lots of accessories. It is better to have that perfect necklace than to wish you had brought it.

Stick to the Season

This one’s kind of a no-brainer, but you’d be surprised! Throw on cozy cardigans and knee-high boots for fall, off-the-shoulder tops and rompers for summer, coats and scarves for winter, etc.

Wear Shoes that Make Sense

If we’re going to be somewhere earthy, opt for flats, boots, or something that blends into the scene. High heels generally don’t mix well with soil. Remember, the goal is to be comfortable, stylish, and still yourself. Remember also that if you have that amazing pair of shoes, let us know. We will figure out a way to incorporate them into the shoot...even if it is at the end.

Make Sure You’re Comfortable

On that note, we’ll be sitting, standing, and posing for a couple hours, so make sure that whatever you wear you feel comfortable moving around in. This can make a huge difference in how the shoot goes and how the images turn out!
