CONGRATULATIONS! You are planning (or at least researching) your senior portrait session. How exciting!

Not sure where to start? Here are a few tips to help you prepare and hopefully reduce your stress. In case you did not know, My Story Minnesota offers senior portrait sessions that try to be a hybrid between the traditional portrait session and the on-location "natural light" photography. What does that mean? No matter the light mother nature gives us, we will make sure your portraits are taken in the best light that will result in that stunning shot.

Follow these guidelines the weeks leading up to your session and, while keeping an open communication channel with them, let your photographer take care of the rest.

If you would like to talk with us about capturing this special milestone in your life, please click on the inquiry link below this text.

  1. Choose two to three outfits to wear during your session and lay them out so they are ready to go. Make sure they are clean and wrinkle-free. Check with your photographer to see if there are limits on the number of wardrobe changes. My Story Minnesota seniors enjoy unlimited wardrobe changes, but each photographer and studio creates the package that works best for them...Make sure to ask.

  1. Also, don’t forget to pack any accessories! Make sure you pack some that go with specific outfits and then pack some that you love...we can get super creative at the end of the session and it is always a sad day when we hear, "shoot, I wish I would have brought that necklace." It is better to bring an accessory you are unsure of and have it go unused than to wish you had it. Bring matching socks/tights, and shoes for each outfit if one pair won’t go along with all of them and don't forget scarves, earrings and bracelets.

  1. While you’re at itif you plan on bringing any props – your favorite dance shoes, favorite book, sports gear, or jersey, etc. – go ahead and lay that out as well. If you are going to bring your car to the session and want it to be in photos with you, be sure to wash it the night before/day of your session.

  1. Get a good night’s rest the night before so you can look well rested for your session. Your eyes will be magically brighter in your session. Think that is crazy? Check out this article from NBC News.

  1. Get your hair cut about one to two weekprior to your session. PLEASE don’t drastically change it from your normal style so close to your session. While unlikely you don't want to be caught with a brand new hairstyle you don't like so close to your senior session. That said, at your haircut just prior to your senior portraits, ask your stylist show you some easy styles you can do during outfit changes to switch your look up a bit.

  1. Practice your makeup the week leading up to your session so you can get it perfect the day of. Consider hiring a professional makeup artist, I promise it is worth the extra cost, but it is not essential as long as you like your makeup skills...this is why it is important to practice.

  1. If you wake up two days prior to your session, or the morning of, and acne has appeared on your face, don't worry...but don’t pick at it and make it worse while trying to get rid of it. Apply some makeup over the area (not too heavy) and leave it at that. Many photographers (including My Story Minnesota) offer basic "blemish" removal for just this reason.

  1. Get a manicure the day before or day of your session to ensure your nails look their best. Don’t forget that the color needs to match all of your outfits. For this reason, and to keep a clean appearance, we suggest going with the French manicure or just a clear coat of paint. We like to encourage you to make a memory with your mom and ask her to go with you. It will be a fun experience for you to remember.

No matter what you have planned for your senior portrait session, remember that being you is more important than being an idea of who you are. Relax, enjoy the experience and make it a memory maker for you and those close to you.
